OUR FIRST LEAGUE COMPETITION WINNERS - WELL DONE SEE YOU AT THE NEXT

COMPETITION

Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club hosted their second deep sea angling competition on Saturday last week. After bad weather caused the the competition to be moved from the 5th to the 12th all anglers were keen to get into some descend fish in beautiful weather conditions.

It was an early start to the day with the official start of the competition scheduled for 5am. The game plans were in place and many skippers decided to target cob in the morning and then to work the shallow banks to increase their number of species that qualified for weigh in. This was the plan, however, skippers and crew were confronted with a tricky day on the ocean. Many reasonable size fish were caught but the big ones were skittish and suffered from a serious case of ‘lockjaw’. That said, the anglers who persisted with their strategy were rewarded and they managed to bring fish to the scales. A big  thank you must also be extended to those anglers who successfully caught and released fish classified on our protected species list.

Thanks to all skippers and crew involved in the competition, and in particular to the skippers who safely navigated the way back to Mossel Bay.

To all MBYBC Boating Members, the next competition is scheduled for the 3rd of December and we eagerly await its arrival.

If you haven’t entered the Cob Derby yet, please check out the website (www.mbybc.co.za) for competition info and entry forms.

SALTIC 2012

Biesmelk Anglers Win Saltic 2012

On a day that many anglers would have preferred to stay sheltered from a feisty easterly wind, skipper Walter Robertson on the boat Biesmelk showed how valuable local knowledge is in competitive angling. The Saltic is the only angling competition that targets game fish and landing these fish in challenging weather conditions such as that experienced on Saturday is a testament to the skills of the skipper to “fish the conditions”.

This year we had 24 boats and 84 anglers that entered the competition and on the day most decided to target species that could be found in the bay, thus eliminating chances of landing dorado, skipjack, and tuna. The easterly wind made offshore angling challenging and skippers decided to start the day catching live bait and then to troll the shoreline in search of Garrick. Many beautiful size Garrick were brought to the weigh in but it was the boat Biesmelk which produced not one, but two trophy sized fish.

Skipper Walter Robertson’s game plan worked out perfectly with a 10.8kg Garrick landed by Thomas Fourie which was followed by a 14.2kg Garrick landed by Lilani Venter. These two fish took first and second prize and yet again we had a female winner claiming the title of best angler during a prestigious competition. Janie Venter on the boat Bad Cat took third with a Garrick of 5kg. Robert Edwards, was the only junior angler to weigh in fish on the day which included two Garrick and a bonito. Many bonito were also landed during the competition and these came into play for the skippers prizes.

The results follow: Biggest fish and first prize went to Lilani Venter – 14.2kg Garrick (R5000 + dropshot angling kit). Second was Thomas Fourie – 10.8kg Garrick (R3000), and third was Jannie Venter – 5 kg Garrick (R2000). The Skippers prizes were as follows. First was Jannie Venter on Bad Cat, second Piet Barnard on Gorrie, and third was Walter Robertson on the boat Biesmelk.

Thank you to all who participated in this year’s event and to the Boating Section of the MBYBC who organized the event.
