Cob Derby 2011-A first in history…
What a pleasure it is to report on the results of the 11th Annual Cob Derby that took place on the 17th and 18th of December hosted by the Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club. A competition of this magnitude requires months of planning and preparation and in trying financial times it was a pleasure to welcome a field of 65 boats and more than 250 anglers to this years competition. For the first time in the competitions history a boat valued at R120 000 were up for grabs and another first was that the competition would run over a two day period. This made for an interesting twist to previous years’ competitions and allowed many anglers with that much needed ‘second chance’ on catching the big one.
In addition to the boat, a R100 000 was yet again up for grabs, if an angler weighed a cob exceeding the 100 pound limit (45.359kg). An this is where it got interesting. Never before has a 100 pound fish been caught on the day of the competition. Always a week before, or a few days later, but never on the day. This year would be different with a fish exceeding a 100 pounds landed. Unfortunately, this angler never entered the competition and subsequently missed out on winning the boat and putting a R100 000 in his pocket. This angler must be haunted by the words “if only I had entered”. Next time make sure that if you go deepsea angling on the day of the cob derby, have your name entered as a participant. You never know, it could be your lucky day.
The competition took place in perfect weather conditions and resulted in plenty big cob being caught. The quality of fish landed during this year’s competition were a major drawing card for visitors and each fish was carefully weighed. The results were announced on the second day of the competition during the much anticipated prize giving. The results and prizes follow:
1st – Piet Grobbelaar on the boat Catfoot weighed in a cob of 29.1kg and won himself a 4.7m boat and 60hp Mercury engine valued at R120 000 in addition to fishing tackle.
2nd – Marius Strydom on the boat Sirius weighed in a cob of 20.9kg and won himself a cash prize of R10 000 and fishing tackle.
3rd – Raymond Jacobs on the boat Ka Ri Li weighed in a cob of 19.4kg and won himself a cash prize of R 7 000 and a fishing tackle.
4th – Steve Denny on the boat Must Bite weighed in a cob of 18.7kg and won himself a cash prize of R 5000 and a fishing rod.
5th – Brett Wiehann on the boat Must Bite weighed in a cob of 18.3kg and won himself a cash prize of R 2000 and a fishing rod.
And to reiterate the words of competition winner, Piet Grobbelaar, the success of the day can only be attributed to a team effort, “dit was ‘n spanpoging gewees!” A big thank you to this ‘team’ which includes our committee members, sponsors, participants and members of the public who made this year’s event one to remember despite difficult financial times.
