Human Powered Craft (HPC) Section Report – September 2015

September was as sad month for the HPC section with the sudden death of Danie Smit our previous rear commodore and the driving force behind the establishment of the HPC section.  Danie loved the sea and paddling and it was a sad but fitting occasion on Sunday 20 September when his wife Hester and a number of paddlers paddled out from the yacht club to strew his ashes in the sea where he used to paddle so often.  Danie will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.  Our prayers and thoughts are with his wife Hester and son Siegfried. Summer is…

Commodores Report September 2015

The opening cruise was held on the 12th of September and was very well attended. The club was open to the public as usual and we received a lot of visitors on the day. Wind and sea conditions kept a lot of the younger less experienced sailors off the water but safety is as always the major consideration. The different sections are fairly active and the onset of summer and the good waeather of late is enticing members to spend time at the club. We will be discussing the upcoming season at the main committee meeting and will be setting…

Diving Section Report for September 2015

The only action that took place was the continued training on the Development side, all of our pupils are doing well and at this stage Rasta can swim approximately 20 meters crawl. He just needs to sort out his breathing and then he will go from strength to strength. Abu who could not swim a stroke in January is now able to swim 14 lengths non- stop & Ricky can easily swim a 100 meters. I am very proud of them all. I have approached my son Geoff, who is a qualified PADI Instructor to carry out the final Scuba…

Opening Cruise – from the crew of „Therese“

13 September 2015, early morning: How will the weather going to be? Do we have the flag dressing handy? Is the yacht neat and tidy? How many others will attend to the sail past? – It is always the same … attending to the opening cruise feels like unwrapping a big birthday present. Maybe not for the grey sea bears anymore, but for newbie’s like us, especially if it is the very first time with our  own keelboat “Therese”. Unfortunately the wind wasn’t on our side. It blew with around 21 knots from SE, and because of we can’t reef…

We are in our off season at present and there has not been any club sailing. The sailing school has however resumed lessons after the school holidays. We have approximately eighty children attending sailing classes on a weekly basis. We held our annual sailing AGM on Thursday the 23rd of July. I was pleasantly surprised at the numbers of members attending. A very good meeting was held and Jean du Plessis was chosen as the next Rear Commodore Sailing for 2015/2016. His committee are as follows: Secretary – Elaine Dannhauser, Keelboat rep – Jamie, Beach boat rep, Ross Murdoch and…

As reported last month some of our sailors are going to take part in the Topper worlds that is going to be held at Lake Garda, Italy. This group have got their Visa ready and they will be flying…

The race started with a slow pace at around 5 knots and the girls on the 420 took an early lead.  The waves built and as we got to the rig they were quite substantial and pushing us towards the Orca. Pieter de Villiers and Johan and Judy…
